Dental Cleaning
A dental cleaning (prophylaxis) is a preventive procedure that removes soft plaque and hardened tartar from tooth surfaces, above and slightly below the gumline, followed by polishing and flossing. Regular cleanings prevent cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss.
Why some cleanings feel different than others
A good cleaning isn't fast. It isn't a 15-minute polish with a vibrating tool and a handoff to the dentist. It's deliberate: the hygienist uses hand instruments where the ultrasonic scaler can't reach, spots the calculus buildup at the gumline, and finishes with a polish that actually removes stain not just the appearance of one.

What happens in a routine cleaning
Assessment. The hygienist checks your gums, records any changes from last visit.
Scaling. Plaque and hardened tartar removed using ultrasonic and hand instruments.
Polishing. A rotating cup with fine paste removes surface stains and smooths tooth surfaces.
Flossing. Between every tooth, checking for gum response.
Fluoride treatment (optional, usually covered for adults at higher decay risk).
Exam by Dr. Yeo when paired with a comprehensive or recall exam.
When you might need a deep cleaning instead
Routine cleaning (prophylaxis) handles plaque and mild tartar. When tartar extends significantly below the gumline or gum pockets measure 4mm+, a deeper procedure is often indicated scaling and root planing. Dr. Yeo will discuss which is appropriate based on your periodontal exam.
