Gum Contouring
Gum contouring corrects uneven gum lines and "gummy" smiles — often the missing ingredient in a balanced smile design. Laser-assisted, minimally invasive, usually done in one visit.
When gum contouring is the right move
A beautiful smile isn't just about teeth, the gum line frames them. Uneven gums, excessively short-looking teeth, or a "gummy" smile can make an otherwise healthy smile look unbalanced. Gum contouring corrects the frame.
Common reasons:
Gummy smile — when too much gum shows above the teeth
Uneven gum line — one side higher than the other, or individual teeth with irregular gum heights
Pre-cosmetic work — reshaping gums before veneers for a coordinated outcome
Short-looking teeth that are actually a normal size but partially covered by excess gum
How it works
Consultation and planning. Dr. Yeo evaluates the gum line, discusses the desired outcome, and maps the reshaping digitally.
Local anesthesia. The treatment area is fully numbed.
Laser reshaping. A dental laser precisely removes excess gum tissue and contours the gum line. The laser cauterizes as it cuts, minimizing bleeding.
Polishing. The tooth surfaces and new gum line are smoothed.
Recovery. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
Most cases are complete in 30–60 minutes.
What to expect after
Mild soreness and sensitivity for 2–3 days
Soft foods recommended for 24–48 hours
Full healing of the gum line typically within 1–2 weeks
Final cosmetic work (veneers, etc.) usually placed 2–4 weeks after contouring
