Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces remain the most effective option for complex bite corrections. Dr. Yeo will recommend them when Invisalign won't do the job, not the reverse.

When braces are better than Invisalign

Invisalign works for most adult cases. But not all. Severe crowding, significant bite corrections, complex tooth rotations, and certain growth cases in teenagers are often handled better by traditional braces. The reason is simple: brackets and wires can apply forces in three dimensions at once, in ways clear aligners can't.

A good orthodontic diagnosis tells you which option fits your case. Dr. Yeo's 2 years of continuing education with the Academy of GP Orthodontics is specifically focused on that kind of diagnosis.

What braces treat well

  • Severe crowding where teeth need to rotate significantly

  • Complex bite corrections (deep overbite, severe underbite, significant crossbite)

  • Pre-surgical orthodontics (coordinated with oral surgery)

  • Growing patients where jaw growth is being guided

  • Cases where compliance with removable aligners is uncertain

How braces treatment works

  1. Comprehensive orthodontic exam. Bite analysis, facial growth assessment, X-rays and photos.

  2. Treatment planning. Dr. Yeo maps out the specific movements needed and estimates timeline.

  3. Braces placement. Metal brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected with an archwire. Takes about 60–90 minutes.

  4. Adjustments every 4–6 weeks. Wires are changed and adjusted as teeth move through planned positions.

  5. Removal. When treatment is complete, brackets are removed and teeth are polished.

  6. Retention. Custom retainers protect the result long-term.

Most traditional braces cases take 12–24 months depending on complexity.

What to expect during treatment

  • First week: soreness and adjustment period. Soft foods recommended.

  • Routine discomfort: usually mild, especially after adjustments. Over-the-counter medication helps.

  • Food restrictions: avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage brackets.

  • Oral hygiene: braces require more careful brushing and flossing. Water flossers help.

  • Office visits: every 4–6 weeks for adjustments.
